WhatsApp Hack That Can Hijack Accounts & Measures To Prevent It

Ever since lockdown has taken place across the globe the global usage of messaging applications has increased to a huge rate. Right from wishing each other health to the circulation of information across channels has increased. Amongst various messengers, Whats’s App (market leader in the messaging industry) alone has 40% more usage in the past week’s time.

The health emergency in which we are living through is also being seen as a surge to cybercrime. In recent weeks the industries have witnessed various thefts where cybercriminals are looking for opportunities to catch hold of information with the use of tools like malware to pishing and hijack to counterfeits have grown in the past week. This is one trend that doesn’t show any sign of abating. This comes across as a shock to most people, however, WhatsApp hack has been in the industry for more than a year now.

How does this hack really work?

Whenever you purchase a new phone and put in your credentials you are asked to put in the mobile number that is connected to your bank accounts as well that. So when you feed your mobile number on the application attacker tracks your activities and send you a fake OTP and as soon as you put that in you are trapped. However, it is not necessary that you will reinstall your WhatsApp messengers every now or then.

And the attackers are well aware of that so they have something else lined up for you. Basically an attacker uses an account that is already been hijacked by them. Where they contact a victim’s friend and tell them that they are having issues receiving a six-digit code (OTP), and so had it sent to them and request this friend to send it back. Unknowingly you have given access to your WhatsApp to the attacker.

So how can you avoid this hack?

    • Don’t share the OTP one of the most obvious advice we have is that no matter what never share any OTPs to anyone.
    • People don’t realize this that when you receive an OTP for your WhatsApp it comes directly on your WhatsApp unless otherwise its a hack.
    • WhatsApp only sends you an OTP if you have agreed to change number when you have changed your sim into a new mobile.
    • Just know this if you are getting a six-digit OTP on SMS instead of on your WhatsApp you are under attack
